Characteristics of Uncheon-seok (Pocheon-seok)
|
|
Uncheon-seok is generally light pinkish with a lot of red feldspar (a type of mineral) suitable for construction materials, stairs, interior floors, and exterior floors, due to
high intensity such as abrasion resistance. It is the best-quality stone material domestically used in well-known buildings such as the Supreme Court building, Busan City Hall,
Daejeon District Court building, Korea Power Corporation building, Busan High Prosecutor's Office, Gwangju High Court, Jeonju Woosuk University, and Seoul National University
Budang Hospital. Story of Chukseongnyeong and Mr. Baekju Oh Eoryong-ri, Pocheon-eup was the hometown of Mr. Baekju Oh, a former
mayor. He was very much devoted to his parents. One year, he was away from his hometown, but heard that his father was very sick with a serious illness. On the way back to his
home, it became dark and he went over to Chukseongnyeong late at night. Suddenly a big tiger roaring loudly blocked his path. Mr. Oh scolded this tiger when he saw it.
"Such a bad animal, how dare you block my way back to my sick father? Get out of my way!" Then, the tiger just disappeared, as it understood what he
had said. Thus, he came back home safely, but he couldn't do anything. Next day, a monk who had taken vows of poverty visited his house, and Mr. Oh made an
offering to him and asked whether there is any prescription for his father's illness. "Even though there is a prescription, but it is very hard¡|"
"Monk, please tell me. I will do anything you say. Please, tell me what it is." "The medicine for his illness is a mixture of raw ginseng and honey from a hole in a
rock" Then, the monk disappeared. Mr. Oh thought it was very discouraging. Since it was wintertime, how could he get raw ginseng anywhere and even honey
from the hole of a rock? However, he went into the deep forest to search for it. Then, he wandered about the valleys and mountains. However, what is this?
Suddenly, the tiger that he met last night showed up in front of him and sat down to offer him a ride. It was very extraordinary. As soon as he rode it, the tiger ran fast to a
place now called "Chukseongnyeong," dropped him off there and then disappeared. He looked around wondering and saw a bee going into the hole of a rock.
"All right, that's the honey inside it! God helped me to find that for sure!" Although he was very pleased, he couldn't move such a huge rock. So, he
kneeled down in front of the rock and prayed to God. Then, a wondrous thing happened a little while later. Honey streamed down from the hole of the rock. His eyes became wide and
couldn't believe it was real honey. He bowed to the rock several times and collected it heading back home. He also searched out for a person who had raw ginseng and bought some.
He mixed raw ginseng and honey for his father as the monk had told him. He was astonished as the medicine worked miraculously and before long his father got well from the serious
illness. After this event, the place on the western foot of the Juyeop Mountain where he prayed is called Chukseongnyeong.
