Story of Magwiam and Doyeongji

Maguiam is also called Hyuyuam (Rock of Owl), located in the southern peak of Jiksan (Mountain), and the scenery from the four directions is spectacular since the western peak is located in Ongnyeo-bong. This rock is known as a piece of art that a demon, Magwi, made and polished. Seonbawi is located in the southwestern side of Mosi-ri about 5km away from the west of Jiksan. Seonbawi is considered as a male while Magwiam is thought to be female.

These are the rocks of the God that produced a famous general by harmonizing the energy after a certain period of time. Such a famous general is not only born in Jiksan, but can be born to any family anywhere across the country. When Seonbawi and Buengbawi are combined as a couple reaching at a certain point of energy and at a right time they give a birth to a famous general. This kind of work was assigned to a Seonnyeo (nymph) from the Heaven, which is called Onnyeobong since she went up and down between the heaven and earth.

The Magwiam is located in the opposite of Jiksan and seen whenever you open your eyes. One day, a mayor of the town looked out the front and the shape had changed since a large rock disappeared like a missing tooth. However, the fortune and good properties were sapped into the space where the tooth fell out. Disease came into the city and spread all over killing the citizens.

The mayor worried so much as he saw the fortune leak away and the disease enter. He felt the power of Magwiam and tried to stop the misfortune. So he performed a ritual to the Heaven, but in vein. The mayor ordered the officials to find the measures against the disaster, but this was useless as well. While the mayor tired taking a rest, the spirit of the mountain showed up in his dream and told him to construct the pond in front of Magwiam to reflect a rock. He disappeared saying that the misfortunes would be prevented. A mayor, who woke from such a dream, mobilized the people to build a pond to reflect the rock. After that, the loss of fortune and property was prevented by the pond called Doyeongji.

Although misfortune had been avoided the fortune taken did not come back. Madwoman still has a big gap from the gap in the front teeth. That area is called Bokchulmun where property and fortunes leaked away.

In 1960s, when Seonbawi was deconstructed to be used as the materials for the embankment during the construction of Yeongseong Reservoir in Cheonan, the residents said how poor Magwiam was since it lost her husband.

On the thanksgiving days every year, the ritual was performed to thank to the God and to pray for a good harvest. Many people climb the rock where one can view fields of rice. The events have disappeared while Doyeongji remains as an agricultural reservoir that attracts the visitors to the fishing site. In addition, according to another view, since this Magwiam has an image of consuming 4,000 seoks (equivalent to 20,480 bushels) of grain every year.

The town will become rich again if the pond is constructed below the rock and the rock is reflected from the pond. Therefore, the people in the town dug a deep pond and to reflect the rock in the pond, which is now called Doyeongji.
