Story of Yongchu and Yongbawi

Yongchu, where two dragons fought each other to get a magic crystal ball, is located at the place where a stream flows from the northeast side of Palyoungsan (Mountain) to the Yeojaman (gulf). This Yongchu is shaped as a basin in a huge area of about 1,500 pyong (4,500m2). People have anticipated the rain whenever the deep blue-black colored river swells with angry waves. The place where Yongchu and Yongbawi is Uam Village in Uam-ri located at the tip of Jeomam-myeon. It is well known as a rich source of fish due to the clean sea surrounding the place and it attracts many fishing boats from Jeonnam, Gyeongnam, and Seoul.

Once upon a time two dragons lived in Yongchu and competed to climb up into the sky first. At this time, a person named Siin Ryu who lived in Goheung, a descendent of Cheongsin Ryu, came into Gancheon Village in Yongchu Valley to live. He had integrity and intelligence with extraordinary archery skills.

One day, a old man with white hair appeared in this dream and said, "As it is almost the time for two dragons living in Yongchu to climb up to the sky, they will fight each other over a magic crystal ball to climb up to the sky first. Then, you will shoot an arrow into one of them and kill it. If you fail, Gancheon Village will be destroyed." Mr. Ryu woke up and realized how special his dream was. He went out and waited to shoot an arrow, hiding between rocks nearby. Suddenly, with the rumbling of thunder, the sea cried out and made angry waves! The deep water of Yongchu reversed and two huge dragons continued in a fierce fight. Mr. Ryu who risked his own life shot his best arrow.

After a moment the water became bloody, and one dragon climbed up into the sky, stepping on Yongbawi located in the south of Yongam Vallage. Although hundreds of years have passed, the traces made by the dragon when it climbed still remain. The other angry dragon shot by an arrow became a stone back after hitting the beach of Yongchu Valley with his tail. A person can never build on such a rocky shoreline considering its shape.

Also, the base rocks surrounding the 120m tall Yongbawi are flat, so that thousands of people can sit and play. Moreover, both sides of Yongbawi are formed like a folding screen, and two candlestick rocks are placed side by side, where villagers still hold rituals to pray for a good haul. A turtle-shaped rock is located around there and you can find a 50-pyong (150m2) underwater dragon cave about 150m away from the cliff. When the waves hit the cave, the crying sound of the dragon cave can be heard about 12 km away. When it rains, the crying sound of the dragon cave along with the wind can be heard even at the local office that is 30 km away. The crying sound from this dragon cave has acted as a weather forecast for hundreds of years.
