Legends of Palseokdam’s 8 Stones

Characteristics of Hamyang-seok

The quality of stone is strong and its pattern is beautiful, Hamyang-seok has been widely used as a corner stone of a building and pavilion for a long time. Recently it became popular for general buildings, connecting stones, and monuments with a continuous increase in exports. Some manufactures have collected the stone without consideration of the environment and now the development is limited.

Story of Giam Cliff's Yongchu Valley

Many places have a legend related to a dragon, but that of Hamyang is special. Once upon a time, dragons lived at all 8 ponds and 8 wells in Yongso of Yongchu Valley, Yongchu Falls, and Hwarimdong Valley, and 10 illegitimate dragons lived 10 km away at Yongyudam.

These dragons had special talents appearing in unexpected places and at unexpected moments. They dug through the underground making a cave and went around through tunnels. This dragon cave still remains at Yongchu Falls to the Namgang(River) Dam in Jinju-si.

These half brothers fought each other all the time. One day a dragon that lived in Harimdong Valley fought against a younger half brother, the youngest dragon of Yongyudam, and one eye was poked out by a younger brother. Thus, the dragons came and went to discuss to prepare for a fight. Since the dragons had to save their physical strength for more than 1,000 years to go up into the sky the dragons that lived in Hwarimdong and Yongchu Valley began to make a path made by granite to crawl into the water flowing along the valley.

As the strong dragons filled up the gaps and dug away at the hill, rocks of fantastic shape at mountains, such as Hwangseoksan, Obongsan and Gyeagwansan were formed. In addition, to slide down to the road, the stone was polished by chipping off tiny pieces. One day, all the dragons began to fight, and the steep configuration of the ground in Hamyang-gun was formed by shaking both the sky and the ground. The illegitimate dragons that lost the fight were exiled in Yongyudam. The dragons of Hwarimdong and Yongchu Valley who won the fight were also exhausted and hid deep under the ground to rest until now. After a 1,000 years legend has said that they will come out into the world again to begin their endless struggle again.
