Ulleungdo is a pentagon-shaped island formed from a volcano that is a watershed around the center of Seongin-bong of Peak of Saints (984 meters above the sea). The mountain is rugged and steep mostly except for Naribunji (Basin).
The natural stones (Mongdol) scattered along the coast of Ulleungdo are very beautiful. Namyang Pebble Beach is an especially beautiful and a wonderful place to spend time with the family. It is more than enough to attract people looking for the summer night scenery with moonlights the shining on black pebbles and white waves. So much is the beauty that taking the stones of Ulleungdo is now prohibited for the protection of the area.
Story of Sajabawi
Once upon a time, Ulleungdo was a country called "Usanguk" ruled by King Uhae. The brave King Uhae conquered Daemado(Island), and brought "Pung Minyeo (meaning Wind Beauty)," a daughter of the king of Daemado to have as a queen. King Uhae who fell in love with this beautiful queen, plundered even Silla (one of three Korean Kingdoms) for the luxury of his loving queen.
The people of Silla could not endure it and asked several times for the king of Silla to conquer Usanguk. The king of Silla ordered General Lee Sabu to conquer Usanguk. With wisdom, General Lee Sabu placed fire-blowing wooden lions at the heads of all ships and made his men shoot arrows at the enemy.
He landed at the shore of Usanguk and the soldiers of Usanguk lost the will to fight after seeing the scary fire-blowing animals. King Uhae surrendered by taking off his helmet. General Lee Sabu who won the war left a wooden lion for the remembrance of the Usanguk conquest. This wooden lion was changed into Sajabawi or Rock of Lion and the helmet that King Uhae took off is called Tugu-bong. Even now two rocks which resemble a lion and a helmet on the shores of Namyang Village in Nam-Myeon, Ulleung-gun still tell of an old mysterious legend as a tourist attraction for the visitors to Ulleungdo. |
