Story of Ahopbawi (Nine Rocks)

There once were 9 rocks that have disappeared completely, but only have a legend in Songsan Village, Gigok-ri, Bongsan-myeon, Damyang-gun. The current Bongsan-myeon had been called Guam-myeong until 1914.

Once upon a time a young man Jeon, and his single mother lived together. His home was poor and they often missed meals. To make things more miserable, his mother became sick. Since it was a bad harvest year, he could not work even as a day laborer to sell charcoal. He and his mother had to survive on just herbs. Jeon whose mother was near to death laid on the bed as his body was weak, too. As he lied there, he heard the last wish of his mother to have just one bowl of rice, he sighed and rose up to go beg for rice. However, it was very difficult to find rice since people had become cold-hearted during the period of the bad harvest.

He searched for days and found a bowl of rice puked by a dog in front of a rich man's house. He collected the rice washed it again and again to serve it politely after cooking it again. When the son looked at his mother eating rice deliciously, he cried and cried inside.

Suddenly, a shining ray from the sky illuminated him as a sweet-scented smoke surrounded the house. Then, the son met an angel of heaven in his dream as he fell asleep. The angel gave him a bag of fortune and offered him nine wishes from it.

Whenever he had a wish he was to bring a rock soaked in clear water to form an altar and make a wish placing the fortune bag on the altar. He did not make any wish for personal gain but only wished for his mother to get better. He made his first wish for her to have a bowl of rice and the eighth wish to make his mother's eyes clear. However, his mother did not regain her health but passed away.

The son wished to follow his mother in death at the front of the 9 altars and his wish was granted. After that, the altars disappeared into the flow of time and became part of a beautiful legend in the area.
