Legends of Palseokdam’s 8 Stones

Characteristics of Macheon-seok

Macheon-seok is a high-quality black stone that shows a black shine when polished. It is domestically and internationally popular as the highest-grade product for tombstones. When exported and its name Macheon-seok is commonly used. Development of this resource started 50 years ago and currently production is conducted in several places. The left over debris from manufacture is also used as a naturally friendly stone for the banks of streams.

Story of Macheon-seok

"Mago" in Duryusan (Mountain) was the queen of the King of Heaven. She could not have a baby and was expelled to the human world against the wishes of the King since his subjects repeatedly appealed to him that a woman who cannot have a baby is a sinner that should not be allowed to dwell in the Heaven.

The king who really loved the queen was in deep sorrow and gave her Duryusan, a land where the energy from the ground was gathered from far away, to encourage her. He told her that if she became pregnant from the energy of ground she should come back to heaven along with 9 dragons.

When the grieving queen was separated from the king, she was given 9 dragons, a flying horse to guide her back to the heaven, and a ship that would bring a good energy from the ground.

"You will come back for sure. When the streams around Jirisan (Mountain) are flooded and become the sea a thousand years later, then you will come back to heaven. When you come back you and I will become the parents of good men and women and govern Hanuri."

She could do nothing but come down to the earth and become Mago of Duryusan. As she came down to the human world, she landed in Duryusan and the dragons from Yongyudam with deep water while a horse landed in Macheon and a ship in Yongyudambyeom formed a figure of the ship striking a sail and sailed into the ocean. When the dragon landed, the waves were about 100-cheok high, and the ground shook when the horse landed.

When the ship landed the soil and rocks were burnt and meshed together due to the heavy weight. It is said that as the nature of Jirisan becomes red, Macheonseok in Macheongol becomes a black stone called Macheonseok. Thus, Mago became the sprite of the Jirisan, waited to go back to heaven by receiving the energy from the ground. Queen Mago who came down to Duryusan collected the energy from the East and waited to go back to the arms of the King.

Since then, the people in the town pray for rain during the ritual if they are going to have a bad harvest and then Grandma Mago in Duryusan makes it rain all over Duryusan. When you ask for a flying horse to deliver good news, Grandma Mago provides good things. If people ask to have herbs and vegetables for the ship (Changamsan), Grandma Mago delivered various kinds of herbs and fruits.

In addition, when a war occurs and a disaster strikes Grandma Mago sheltered them with the front of her garment. Mago believed that in near future, the world would change to create a land of fortune. She waits for the time to go back to heaven while she gets along with the world. When the day comes, the streams under Girisan will flood and Yongyudam will become an ocean. Then the dragons will kick away and fly to heaven, the horse will drink seawater for the energy to go back to heaven. The ship sitting on the burnt rock will rise and begin the voyage. People still believe even now that Grandma Mago went up to the Heaven, blessing the valleys of Duryusan.
